Bells of Steel SS4 Safety Squat Bar Review

This product was in-house tested by Michael at The Jungle Gym Reviews.

The SS4 is a compact, lighter-weight safety squat bar that still carries full commercial-grade specs like 1,500-lb capacity and bearing sleeves. The biggest advantage is how easy it is to live with in a garage gym thanks to its 45-lb base weight and standard-barbell length, while the main tradeoff is slightly shorter sleeves for extreme loading. This bar is ideal for lifters who want a true SSB without fighting storage and maneuverability, while ultra-strong lifters stacking massive bumpers may want more sleeve length.

My Real-World Experience

I’ve been using the SS4 for almost a year, and it replaced much heavier and longer safety squat bars in my garage gym. The first thing you notice is how manageable it is: at roughly 45 pounds before handles, it moves and stores more like a normal barbell instead of a 70-lb awkward monster. Racking, unracking, and walking plates around it in a single-car garage is simply easier. Once it’s on your back, the padding is thick and comfortable, and the camber keeps you upright in a way that feels like a blend of high-bar and front squat. The bearing sleeves make the plates feel more stable through the movement, especially when the bar shifts slightly during the descent and ascent.

Training Use Cases

This bar is built for anyone who wants to squat heavy without wrecking their shoulders or elbows. The forward camber makes your upper back and core work harder than a straight bar, and the interchangeable handles let you choose how much support you give yourself. It’s especially useful for lifters dealing with shoulder mobility issues or anyone rotating SSB work into their programming for upper-back and quad emphasis.

Tradeoffs & Limitations

The shorter 11.8-inch sleeves are the main compromise. Most people will never notice, but if you live in bumpers and load extremely heavy, you’ll hit capacity sooner than on longer SSBs. The bar is also 32mm, which fits most J-cups but can be tight in some roller cups.

Value & Alternatives

Even at its current price, the SS4 undercuts many competing safety squat bars while offering bearings, interchangeable handles, and a garage-friendly footprint. It delivers most of what much more expensive bars do without the storage headaches.

Who Should Buy This

Lifters who want a true safety squat bar that is easy to handle, fits tight gyms, and still supports serious weight.

Who Should Skip It

Anyone who routinely loads massive stacks of bumpers or wants a longer, heavier, competition-style SSB.

Final Verdict

The SS4 hits a sweet spot between performance and practicality, making it one of the most livable and cost-effective safety squat bars for a home gym.
